More than likely it is stress. If you buy a female and don't introduce her slowly into your water it is a shock to her. Like first, she is already stressed from getting taken out of the pet stores tank and then the car ride from where she is moving around because of the car. Then after getting to your house and not getting introduced slowly. (By slowly I mean letting her sit in the water inside the bag, and adding your water to the bag to let her get use to the change in the water.) After about 30 mins. of sitting on top of the water and adding you water little by little, then try putting her into your water and see how she does. I can bet she will be 10 times better. Just give it a try.
Another thing is don't let the males out number the females. You need like 3 females to 1 male.
Good Luck!!!!!

I haven't had this problem. I have bought a total of 7 guppies, and within 4 days one male died and within a week and a half a female died, but other than that they do pretty good. A possibility with your guppies is that you bought some very pregnant females and the act of taking them from their home and putting it in a new home as well as the transportation could stress an already stressed pregnant fish. Try looking at all the fish at the fish store and look for ones that are small with no black gravid spot, these fish might be pregnant (might be carrying male sperm) but not very pregnant and can better deal with stress.

Change pet stores. It's not beyond the realm of possibilities that you have a not too cool dealer.
Do you acclimate the fish in the tank BEFORE you release them into the water by floating the bag for about 15 mins? The temperature can "shock" them.
Are you bouncing them around too much during transport from the pet store causing stress?

And poster above...you can tell, if you get my drift. It's obvious.

Thumbs down? How is my answer different from the one below?
