It is now almost impossible to say anything against vthe government without being in danger, and therefore the press will only toe the government line.

"Free speech zones" were created around political events to keep participants from seeing the protesters. If you wanted to picket an RNC event in 2004, you'd have to do it from six blocks away. People were removed for wearing t-shirts that the Republicans didn't like.

This has nothing to do with 9/11, of course, but it has happened since then.

Edit: And examples like Scarlett O'Hara, above. Questioning the government or criticizing it have now become 'treacherous' (treasonous?). There is no force of law behind it, but malcontents are being shouted down for expressing their displeasure with the government. More of a social curtailment, really.

It hasn't. Despite what the liberals claim, you can still say what you like unless it's dangerous, like yelling "Fire!" in the back of a crowded theater. That wasn't legal before 9/11. Anyone that's read or heard the press will see that they're saying stuff that if the free press had been curtailed, would have been censured by now.

The attacks have been persistent and extensive. Here is an interesting article to read by conservatives who share the same concerns as liberals do about this administration's disdain for basic American civil liberties.

"Real Conservatives Honor Free Speech
But Bush Administration stifles dissent"

people are afraid to say things that may be interpreted as anti american, such as, "those dam americans deserved what they got". also in american universities, the profesors speech has been limited. they used to be protected by tenure and could say what they want but now they can be fired for saying something "liberal" or left wing. so as it stands right now, it is pretty much, say something right wing, or dont say anything at all. and of course the patriot act and the growth of homeland security doesnt help either. of course if you want to look at free speech in a different way, racist free speech has been on the rise. meaning people are free to say racist things. whereas people didnt do that as much before.

None at all. The NY times has been bashing America as fervently as ever, people have been burning flags and Cindy Sheehan has been running her big treacherous mouth. So as you can see all is well for the lefties in our great nation.
