Starting with cave dwellers, humans have always been social. Caves always show signs of multiple people living in one cave.
In today's society, cities and the suburbs around them show that people like to live in groups. We all look for other people for comfort.
Other good examples are clicks in High School and conversations around the water cooler in offices. Both of these are unnecessary, but they are part of our spending time with others.
Another example is that a person in isolation will eventually go crazy, but a person always in a group will not.
Take care,
Troy

People form bands, organizations, fraternities, and sororities, churches, and support groups (see sex and the city cast) leading to a whole customized community of people needing and wanting to be with each other. Thus, the social animal.
Why? Because people are not supposed to be and live in isolation. Relationships, interaction, and communication are both products and instruments of human growth.

People are social because their instincts guide them to communal living. Think about gorillas. They have their own societies built up, and since we are part of the primate family we also inherit that need for companionship.
Think about it this way: many people are terrified of rejection and isolation. This means that being alone and not being acceptable to society are two things that scare humanity as a whole.
I hope this helped somewhat. Think about at a party... how awkward do you feel if you're not in conversation with one of the large crowds there?

Humans need contact and they need to feel connected
to their surroundings, environment and community.
The fear of being alone or abandon is very primal and
strong. I'll give you an example. I lived in Indiana for
a while with my family. My dad was out of town on a
business trip, my 1st younger brother was away at
college which left my mom, my youngest brother and
myself at home. It was winter and a huge blizzard hit
the area shutting down three states. Everyone was cut
off from each other, medical facilities, and food supplies.
The first thing everyone did was dig out to their neighbors
so they could become connected once more. My mother and I took turns shoveling the driveway so we could get
the car out and get to our neighbors. That was all we focused on. Hopefully this helps answer your question.
