My public high school orchestra which is located in the United States is scheduled to perform 'Hatikvah', the national anthem of Israel, at a large, public performance in New York City. Do you feel that this is an appropriate performance piece? Consider the controversial political and religious implications of the piece and the performing group. Thanks for your feedback.

For reference, here are the lyrics to this piece:

As long as deep in the heart,
The soul of a Jew yearns,
And forward to the East
To Zion, an eye looks
Our hope will not be lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free nation in our land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

I have played in my high school band for seven years and every year we play Christmas songs at the "winter" concert.

There's no laws to prevent the playing of what songs, nationally or religiously motivated, the director wants.

Ethically, you are NOT committing treason as long as you are not attempting to recruit people for your country by playing their anthem :)

Depends. What's the purpose for it? Is there a large number of Israelis in the audience? Is an Israeli group going to perform something as well? Is it a celebration of some sort of Israeli holiday or something? Are you performing a variety of international pieces? Frankly, I don't see the problem. When I taught in the inner city, among other things, we were expected to sing "The Black National Anthem" every day. I didn't think that was appropriate for a number of reasons, but that's what was expected.

It relies upon on who your taking area in for. If that is a few variety of performance geared in course of a commonly Jewish crowd, then that's smart in spite of the actual shown actuality that it is variety of tacky. there are lots of Jewish human beings in NYC. If that is a few variety of multicultural journey then it also would make experience see you later as different religions/cultures are represented in music to boot. It does look a touch too very equivalent to a political actuality thinking the project over there. yet, without understanding extra about the point of this performance i will't choose no matter if it is ideal or not.

Yes it is appropriate. It's just a piece of music. It is not vulgar at all. Also, we play religious songs all the time, and that's just as "offensive"...so why not play the national anthem of Israel?

Well, if it's at a ceremony that's Jewish or Israeli in nature, then fine.
Otherwise, it's a strange song choice to make, just to play it for the hell of it...

They are playing the music not signing it. and yes it is great to add songs of various culture into our music.

Why would it not be a great song to add to a recital.
