do get charged for receiving text messages with verizon?

someon told me that i get hit with text message charges even if i only look at them, even as soon as someone sends it even if i dont look at them. is this true?

With Verizon it's 10 cents to send and 10 cents to recieve texts. This is why I contacted them and had them turn off text messaging.

Unless you have unlimited texting or a deal with the comapny, you will get charged for sending and receiving them. I think I pay 5cents a text, but I use verizonwireless.com and send them for free.
