Strange, I would've thought someone would've mentioned Radiohead, Portishead or Bjork. You guys are way too happy !

When I said Radiohead, I meant "Kid A" and "Amnesiac", not "OK Computer". For the Cure, yeah, that's good stuff, and Leonard Cohen, that's very good too.

The first name that comes to my head is Radiohead, although for something a bit older Nick Drake was fairly darm and depressive, especially his last album Pink Moon, recorded not long before he (supposedly) committed suicide

Not a band but certainly Leonard Cohen's first album. The Songs of Leonard Cohen. It's described as music to slash your wrists to. Very sombre & beautiful.

Radiohead too, OK Computer.

And Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Leonard Cohen in The Sixties.

He is the original grumpy old man of rock music and even Radiohead are amateurs compared to this bloke.

The Righteous Brothers. I want to kill myself everytime I hear 'Unchained Melody'. Dull, droning and I have no idea what its about because I've either fallen asleep or switched off after the first few lines. If he's trying to make some one fall in love with him then GOOD LUCK, he'll need it.
These bands like Snow Patrol, Coldplay and Travis. You are in a band for god's sake Cheer up!

Depressive, but utterly brilliant... The Cure. Too many songs to type... but here are some.

Faith
100 Years
The Kiss
Disintegration
Prayers for Rain
A Letter to Elise
Bloodflowers
Charlotte Sometimes
Apart...

Try Big Country's CHANCE
Part of the chorus is OH OH I NEVER FELT SO LOW
The rest is pretty depressing too though it does have a surprisingly jaunty rhythm

or evanescence my tourniquet (hangman's noose) and the words I want to die seriously depressing stuff

A lot of people find Sigur Rós' music depressive, except for their latest album.
