Right now I am indulging in Rosemary Clooney, in particular her CD of Irving Berlin songs. I could hear her sing "What'll I Do?" over and over again. Her phrasing is perfection and the emotion she brings out of each line is pristine. Clooney's voice is like sliding down velvet. This CD has been a real treat. But my very favorite singer is Joan Baez. Her voice at one time spanned five octaves but as she has aged it has lost some of its reach only to find added depth in its place. Listening to the difference between her recording of "Carrickfergus" twenty years ago when she still had a bell-like clarity in the upper registers compared with her live recording of the same song on her "Bowery Songs" CD last year with its decline in range but increased emotional resonance is a gift.

Well, in high school, I listened to Sting and The Police a lot. During college, I kept listening to Sting and various world musicians. Later, after college, I found that Sting still played with various Indian musicians, which made me want to listen to him more. Otherwise, I listen to Dave Matthews Band.
