well...when you go to plug in numbers...its less numbers to add subtract multiply and divide...this means less chance of making a mistake
also...it allows us to write computer programs that will compute complicated thigns faster (mainly because there is less computation)

The equation will be less complicated-looking, at least. When you simplify an expression, you might be able to solve the equation better without all the "clogging", for lack of a better word.

Usually when you mean simplify, you mean factorise- so you have some (x-a)(x-b)(x-c)=0... from which the solution is immediate. So usually you have to simplify it to solve it- it's part of the same process. Also, a honing of the techniques you use are essential if you decide to take mathematics at A-level, or take any subject which might involve using mathematics.
