The ovary releases an egg and if the egg is not fertilized by sperm within 6-24 hours then it dies. The follicle which contained the egg--called the corpus luteum--produces progesterone for 2 weeks after ovulation to thicken the lining of the uterus just in case the egg was fertilized. If the egg was not fertilized, then 2 weeks past ovulation the corpus luteum breaks down and stops producing progesterone. The body withdrawls from the drop in progesterone and the lining of the uterus is shed in the form of menstral blood--or a period.

The women ovulates which is when the egg is released, and then if the egg is not fertilized , then the uterus lining is shed and the egg goes with it. This is the period. So then so starts the cycle again. A couple of weeks after the start of the last period comes the egg, then if its fertilized this time, it attaches itself to the uterus and the period stops.

the blood is around the womb and is a cushion and supplies nutriants and such for the egg. it builds up over time and if it is not needed in a month you start your period and get rid of the old and start building up new for the next month
that is the easies way to describe it

Over riped or too old eggcells are needed to discharge and new eggcell restore, thru this process, we called it monthly menstrual period for womaen. Over riped or old eggcell can't be fertilized with an active sperm cell. Only a mature eggcell does.
