Punnett squares are anything but new. Bateson and Punnett were English geneticists (both born in the 1800s) who performed a large number of experiments on hybridizing various things including sweet pea plants. The Punnett sqaure is a means to determine the number of "hybridized" offspring from a given genetic mating.

they're not new. They're just used to see the ratio of different genotypic offspring 2 parents with known genotypes will have.
