Ok, I used to work there, and this is what I learned....
Originally it was supposed to be Pets Mart, a little play on words, and they spelled it like this: PETsMART and put a little doggy ball over the s. In December 2005, Petsmart decided to OFFICIALLY change its name (no joke ) to Pet Smart, which is now spelled PETSMART with a capital S. They used this as a marketing sceme to advertise how smart they were in the pet business. Check out the latest commercials, they all start out with the phrase "Smart is..." We all had to get new shirts to wear at work, where the only difference was the stupid capital S, and we were sent home to change our shirts if we were wearing the wrong one. It was so STUPID!
So now you know.......

The logo was changed last year to PetSmart with Pet being in blue and Smart being in red.
This is a portion of the press release that was issued 8/25/05
"The difference between 'mart' and 'smart' is more than a single letter," said Francis. "It's a way of being. We are prepared to answer your questions. We are thoughtful in our responses. We are kind and considerate. We are fun. We are smart."
In the television ads they are now saying "that's smart, PetSmart"

I actually had to call info once to get the phone number for a petsmart, and they clam it's Pet Smart. But I always say Pets Mart.
even spell check doesn't know for sure.

I think it depends on where you are from and the type of accient you have. I think yankees(northerners) say it like Pet's Mart. But here in the south is Pet Smart.
