In the comics, it was Joe Chill. They did a story in the fifties where Batman saw a photo of him and recognized him. Unfortunately, Joe Chill had amnesia and could even beat a lie detector! So Batman decided he had to take the risk of ending his career, and unmasked beofre Joe Chill. When Chill saw the accusing eyes of the boy whose parents he killed, his memory returned. He fled, blurting out to his gang that he was responsible for creating Batman, and asked them to protect him. But instead, they gunned him down in revenge, because Batman had put them all in jail at one time or another. He died before they thought to ask him what Batman's real name was.
Later, it turned out that Joe Chill was not just a holdup man, but was acting on orders to kill Thomas Wayne for testifying against a mobster when he had been threatened not to. The Wayne murder case was re-opened! Thomas Wayne, while in costume as a giant bat (!) for a party was abducted and forced to perform surgery on a mob figure. But he turned the tables on his captors and became the first crime-fighting "Bat-man". The mobster was sent to prison though he threatened that he would have Wayne killed. Batman's costume was ruined in a fight and he didn't have any spares ready just then. So he decided to wear the original old costume his father had stored in a trunk in the attic of Wayne Manor. When Batman confronted the mobster with proof that he had ordered the killing, he thought it was Thomas Wayne returned from the dead and panicked. He fled outside, into the path of a truck, which struck and killed him.
In the movies, it was the guy who became the Joker, which was not the same as in the comics.
In the early days Batman sometimes used a gun. He did not habitually carry one, but he would pick one up if a crook dropped it in the course of a fight. He was shown shooting silver bullets through the heart of a vampire in its coffin, in one of his very early adventures. And he sometimes threw villains off rooftops, etc. He did that in his very first appearance, and a policeman was later shown examining the body, so it seems clear that Batman did kill that criminal.
But as things changed in the comic book universe (especially with the introduction of the Comics Code, which you should look up, because it is such an important feature of comics) Batman would never touch a gun, much less use one, and he developed a code against killing, just like Superman. So, by the Fifties, Batman was no longer the grim avenger of the night, but almost a public figure, a constumed police officer. When they began getting him back to his roots with mystery and detective stories being emphasized (late 70's into the 80's and 90's and especially the Dark Knight revision), the grim and gritty hero style became popular and Batman sort of came full circle. Times and tastes changed, and Batman changed with them.

you have to consider what holds true to you, the batman movie continuity, or the batman comic book continuity, what are like two different things. Personally, I find the comic book continuity to hold true. The movies are just like fun adaptations for people who dont read comics. But in the comics, batman never found the person who killed his parents. This brings about an argument among comic book geeks: If batman were to find his parents killer would he take the law into his own hands, or would he turn him over to the police. And would bruce wayne continue to be batman?? In a futuristic tale of batman where he is like 50 years old and has retired, he kills the Joker by snapping his neck. But I dont know if that counts. FYI, did you know that before the joker became a criminal and lunatic, he had a pregnant wife and was a comedian. He had one very bad day which forever changed him into the Joker. This is what will forever connect the joker with batman, but bruce wayne life changed when he too had a very bad day. Damn, I wrote too much.

Domino got it right on the button there except for the fact that Joker killed the 2nd Robin.
Reasons why certain batman series like the Batman movie that the future Joker was the culprit is only because it would drive a good plot that would pit Batman against him. The real fact of it is that the killer is unknown.

I've been a comic book fan for over 30 years but I don't have all your answers.
I would like to say the story in the Batman 1988 movie portrayed his parent's killer as a young joker - a cheap explanation and not at all realistic. I think this is a mystery that keeps Batman fighting over the years. Unfulfilled revenge.
Batman carried a pistol in the early episodes in Detective Comics in 1939-40, but no one died.

The killer has been dubbed as "Joe Chill" as portrayed in Batman Begins. And no, he has never been identified or caught. It wasnt the Joker as he wasnt a villain until Batman was already created.
And Batman has killed pre-crisis back in the day, executing mob bosses with a pistol. Post-crisis, he absolutely against killing but has killed on accident a few times, most notably the Red Hood, aka Jason Todd the former Robin.

In the original Batman movie, the Joker is his parent's killer. I don't know if Batman has ever killed anyone on purpose, but I think he's done it "accidentally" a few times.

It varies from you tells the story. Anyone from Jack Napier (pre-Joker), Joe Chill, and an unknown assailant. So take your pick. The only thing that is certain is Batman carries that event with him everyday, and all the time.
Killing was never the motive for justice, but accidents happened.

The Killer was Joe Chill, he was caught and brought to justice. It is unknown if Batman has ever killed outright although he has had the chance on many occasions.

i think the killer was the joker...back before he was mutated into the joker...it's been a long time since i've seen the movies, but i'm pretty sure he realized it was him. i think the only people that get killed are the major bad guys, like the joker and penguin...
