When a star runs out of nuclear fuel, and therefore continues to lose energy from the surface (it is emitting light energy), while not replacing the lost energy through nuclear fusion (no more nuclear fuel), gravity will win out over internal pressure and the star will contract slowly or collapse quickly depending upon the details of the internal structure and composition. Gravity wins out over the internal pressure of the star, because that pressure was produced by a normal, hot gas, and that gas is losing energy as the star radiates energy from the surface.

The star may thus end up as a black hole.

Well, once a star has collapse into a black hole, the material inside becomes crushed to a point infinite density called a singularity. You will have area outside the hole where if you travel fast enough you can escape the hole. Inside this area you can't escape no matter what your speed. The boundary between these two areas is called the event horizan. The event horizan is shaped somewhat like a disk, rather than a sphere, because the black hole is "spinning". A black hole must have an event horizan, or else it would be a "Naked Singularity".

There is a fairly new hypothesis out there that says that the center of a black whole does NOT collapse into a singularity, but turns into a exotic superfluid. I'm not sure how you could prove or disprove this hypothesis, but as a layman it just sounds like a better theory to me. The singularity just always sounded a little too mysterious and inexplicable.

Stars are just like humans, they are born, they live and they die. All stars have a finite supply of fuel (hydrogen). When a star has exhausted its supply it swells up to become what is known as red giant because there isnt enough gravity to hold onto it. Our sun will become a red giant at some point in the future. It will expand to well beyond the orbit of venus. As the sun expands its core will shrink and become very small. The outside layers will be thrown of into space. All that will be left is known as a white dwarf which is essentially the core only a few 10's of km in diameter. Eventually that to will disappear. Stars which are bigger are a lot more heavier. When a giant star explodes (known as a supernova) it does the same thing except its core is much much heavier. It may only be around 20km but weigh as much as a few hundred or even thousands of suns. Because of this enormous weight it has a huge gravitational effect.

All objects have gravitational effects. When the space shuttle is in orbit it has to travel at around 11km/sec. Any slower and the earth will drag it back down. With a black hole the gravitational effect is so great that even light which is traveling at 300,000km/sec cannot escape. All matter gets sucked into the black hole and gets compressed to an infinite size at the center which is called the singularity.

The escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. Since light cannot escape, the object is "black." This happens when you cram enough mass into a small enough volume.

Neither black holes, nor vacuums "suck". Black holes have gravity just like anything else. Until you get quite close to one, (about twice the distance from the center to the point of no return) it behaves like any other mass gravitationally. If the Sun somehow became a black hole tomorrow without changing its mass, the Earth would continue on in its same orbit just as it has for the past 5 billion years.

A Black hole actually does only one work...sucking.. But if u want to know how it works.. it means how is it formed.

General relativity (as well as most other metric theories of gravity) not only says that black holes can exist, but in fact predicts that they will be formed in nature whenever a sufficient amount of mass gets packed in a given region of space, through a process called gravitational collapse; as the mass inside the given region of space increases, its gravity becomes stronger and (in the language of relativity) increasingly deforms the space around it, ultimately until nothing (not even light) can escape the gravity; at this point an event horizon is formed, and matter and energy must inevitably collapse to a density beyond the limits of known physics. For example, if the Sun was compressed to a radius of roughly three kilometers (about 1/232,000 its present size), the resulting gravitational field would create an event horizon around it, and thus a black hole.

Simplest explanation:

Gravity is what causes everything to fall on earth. In order to leave the earth, you must go fast enough to escape the earth's gravity. This is called the escape velocity. Light moves very very fast. A black hole is a place where gravity is so strong that the escape velocity is faster then the speed of light. That means if light gets pulled into the black hole by gravity, it can never leave, hence the name "black hole." Since nothing can go faster then the speed of light , that means nothing can escape a black hole.

A black hole is an object where the force of gravity is so great that nothing can escape... including light.

Because the force of gravity so large everything that comes close is sucked into it and crushed. Because more mass is added to the black hole is gets bigger and bigger.

extremely high. some scientists have
observed it - when any body eg.commet,
passes through its gravitational field,
it suddenly disappears.

2)the time in black hole is zero[0]
so if a man goes there, he will never die
or will not grow there.
