Technically, it is not a ball but more being shaped similar to a ball. If you're talking about the world being round, Christopher Columbus was the one who proved it.

And to answer your question, Christopher Columbus... he wanted to go the other way from Europe (ie West) to reach China to prove the earth was round... except he found North America
