I teach at a public high school in Milwaukee that is composed of 90% African American students. Many have already been incarcerated, already have children, and already use drugs and alcohol. Many of their parents are in the same situation. The reasons they fight usually stem from something small: a piece of paper hits them, they want the window closed and someone else wants it open. Does anyone have any experience to offer me to reduce or eliminate fights in schools? Incidentally, my husband fought in Iraq, and the behavior of the disgruntled citizens labeled "terrorists" sounds eerily familiar to my students' rash decisions and actions.

When I was teaching in Miami I finally just set up a fighting zone in the room and said, "Those who want to fight may do it over here. Just two at a time, cause there's not much room. Some of you might have to wait. The rest of us are going to have class over here." The students were so pleased, and the fighters lost interest.

I've got to tell you, though, that was a day or two after there was a terrific fight in the hall and all I did was watch it carefully. One of the students asked, "Aren't you going to do anything, Ms. S?" I said, "No. They look pretty evenly matched." Pause. "You're enjoying this, aren't you? Black boys getting hit." I said, "Look who's fighting. Of all the people around here, aren't they the ones who need a whuppin' the most? And who's going to give it to them?" So the spectators broke up the fight.

well, with our liberal laws, there isn't much you can do short of having them expelled, but that doesn't bother them..these inner city kids have a whole different way of life, and until the inner city itself is cleaned up, the schools will be a mirror of the streets..i suggest, for your sanity and safety, move away..

it is really hard.....i mean some ppl u just can't change. You will have to target them one by one because punishments won't work with them.
