The problem requests you to establish a direction with respect to a magnetic compass, etc. You must be at a starting point perhaps a stake in the ground or a tree on a treasure map? Use the compass to face West (as opposed to North, South or East) then turn 53.1 degrees toward the North (to your right) as indicated on the compass. You will now be facing in the correct direction and could point there or draw a line on the ground or have a distant rod-man move to get on the line. A surveyor's compass will work much better than a hiker's compass because the scale is far more accurate (as required in your problem). A typical land survey may require you to find perhaps four such directions (bearings) and line lengths to enclose an entire square or rectangular plot. The plot description is recorded on the deed using bearings and property line lengths. For a triangle there will be only three such bearings and lengths. Hope that helps a little.

Think right triangle 53.1 degrees is angle A the N refers to Angle C. Angle B is always 90 degrees. Therefore angle C = 180 - A - B.

we just did that, #23 on page 225 right? the line between the two trees runs north south so it's perpendicular to the line running west. that means they form a right angle so you have the right angle, the 53.1 degree angle, and the 250ft. side. that's enough information for AAS.
