The US is on the decline. The Romans began to decline when they went to a mercenary army and so are we now. It is a symptom of no longer being willing to make the burdens shared by all, but instead hiring them done. As we continue to outsource jobs and pile up trade debt to countries like China, we become more and more dependent and beholding to others. We continue to have the strongest military, but it won't be long until China's economy will challenge our own. And as we erode our moral leadership on the world's stage, we will also lose respect. Further, the quality of education in this country has fallen so far that our math and science scores are now 38th in the world, and we are in a competitive hi-tech world economy, we will shortly lose our competitive edge and head in the direction of our scores. So probably China will become the next superpower on the way up,and unless we do something about our debt and world respectability, we will soon pass them on the way down.

If we are being honest, America has only been a Super power for sixty years. (1945 - present). She only really rose to dominance when the rest of the competition where on their knees. Japan, Germany and Britain recovering from the post war effort. It is a bit like running a race when the other competitors are suffering from a bout of flu.
America cannot claim to be a truly great civilization, what has been brought out of America that did not come form either German scientist captured in WWII or 1st generation immigrants? Even the internet is not an American invention.
America has been lucky that is all, for if the US was a great civilization, like the Romans, Greeks, Persians etc then she would have known what to do with that power. Instead it has been a litany of failed adventures abroad.
The problem is now the rest of the world is on it's feet again. Europe as a trading entity is very strong and will challenge the US for dominance, watch and see the day oil is priced in Euros.
The US is weak and ill, because it has failed to learn the lessons of history. It has a John Wayne, we're the best so middle finger up to the world. It is not and should approach the world in a more humble manner. Learn to respect other cultures and values, like the Amerindians, the Chinese, the French etc. The US needs to learn how to co-operate with the world.
I am not sure there will be another super power, China has to many internal problems that are not overtly publised, like the poisoning of whole towns due to environmental pollution or the separatist movements in the North of China. It is time for the world to grow up and behave like civilized humans not spoiled children.
A wise man once said: "Any nation which spreads fear and hatred unto nations, shall in itself be torn apart by fear and hatred."
That was Benjamin Franklin, i hope he is wrong, for all our sakes.

The country has an almost perfect democratic system of government.
It is a pity that it is (mis)used for serving the interests of incompetent governments that rise to power helped by people who's only interest is how to get richer.
In that sense, the US is going through a decline, because wealth is the wrong measure for "civilization". Civilization and Ghettos don't match.
On the other hand, many discoveries and inventions for the common good are taking place every day, so, in that sense, there would be no decline in the horizon if politicians shaped up and the the people who vote for them woke up.
Remember: The Romans invaded the Greeks by force of arms, but the Greeks conquered the Romans by the might of their minds.
PS D.D.Cat (below) puts it very eloquently. If this cat would run for president he/she would have my vote!

The west has been in decline with the aid of fact the 60's, i've got self assurance that's specifically with the aid of shortcoming of conforming and meritocratic factors of society. Conformity is easily not a hip word or fee now, yet a society that perspectives and sees itself as one and finished will paintings extra in the direction of conserving up sturdy community bonds. between the main motives Africa nevertheless sucks even after this form of long era is as a results of the fact distinctive communities of folk are grouped right into a single united states. Egalitarianism is the hot ism which could be extra "ethical" looking on your ethical compass yet international locations did not get potential, wealth, and impact in step with attempting to equalizing outcomes yet by making use of attempting to acquire performance, potential, national pastime, etc which benefited something the inhabitants in the country. quickly extra concentration on national self pastime and much less the worldwide over centred. What I even have reported could offend some, or perhaps that's "ethical" that the West is going into decline to equalize with different factors of the worldwide. As different areas get nicely there are extra techniques for hard paintings, ideas, etc. If there became into an extremely wealthy united states in Africa the ideas drain on the area does not be modern. So it relies upon on how the area is physique.

if you look at how the USA become a super power.they took countries.that were in bad shape.after wars.and that included there so called friends like the UK.and they are doing the same today.imposing there will on small and poor countries.and they are putting despots in to power around the world.were the USA wants something like oil/gas/ etc. and i don't think the USA will give all that up when China becomes the biggest power on earth.because want something for nothing.or for very little.to the cost of the rest of the world.and the USA owes the rest of the world trillions of dollars.of debt

The US is probably the world's first and last 'benine' rulers. I don't see that American people have any real ambition for anything outside the US
The US can't be rated against others as a 'great civilisation' because it is a mongrel state, it is a conglomeration of most of the world's traditions which in historical terms has barely begun to form its own identity. Even to this day if you see an American walking down the street you spot that they're American before you discern where they originated from but the fact is you can still see those origins whereas in others like England for example, ahundred or so centuries ago, which had very similar beginnings (as a country of disparate occupying cultures, which incidentally it still is).
Ten years is the blink of an eye when you're talking civilisation, but civilisation is highly overrated, especially its beginnings. it involves too much killing and too much loss of good art, culture, medicine and other productive things that less greedy peoples might posess, take how Caesar almost anialated the Celts and their superior social structures and beautiful arts, medicines etc for example just for their gold!
The Arabs are quiet now but they had their day too and so did Iran (although it was also numerously abused by Britain Russian and America) over recent centuries for nothing but their oil supply...
I won't miss proper 'civilisation' and everything it entails, I prefer whatever mish-mash it is that we have now and hope we start to find things like war too ineffective as political solutions and too costly economically.
Past 'civilisation' was very one sided, elitist and not very civil at all. The age of Reason should rule now! The age of Democracy is where we should be living in, because unless Bush changes his mind soon! (:D)
land will start drowning
and people will start dying,
we'll cut trees to find places to live
and then we'll have a shortage of air,
then it'll all just be down hill from there...
(didn't mean 2make it rhyme but... :-)
We will have super powers to join in the fray as other countries come to dominate the world's stage, that's why i'm generally quite pleased that it's America and not any other country that has been the leading figure so far, becuase I don't see any other world power, from Britain, France, Russian, Iran, Korea, Japan China... whatever! I don't see any of those countries happilly allowing countries to develop to a stage where they have as much autonomy as they do now, and as much scope to come anywhere near considering the building of things like armies, bombs, banks etc without alot of controls and interferance and underhand play and general bloodshed that ALL other dominant countries have indulged in copiously.
So power to America, it definitely has her bad points but hopefully it's very worst is very much in its past and even if they might be in the pale on issues like iraq and global warming, hopefully it will be a whiter shade of pale than others might indulge.

A month ago, I would have agreed; now we have hope if the DEMS can find the courage to reverse the order of things. Reinstate the middle class and take care of everyone and a new age will emerge. Why do we need a siuper power? that denotes war and conquering; super powers ALWAYS decline - history has spoken! Now is the time to take care of people both domestically and abroad. I vote for the new order - a revolution by vote. It has started IF...we care for all! Not fight and kill to the aLMIGHTY!

The people that lead your country no longer operate on the principles upon which your country was founded upon.
Greed, corruption and personal goals cloud your government's eyes.
I don't know if you hear much of what goes on outside of the US but there is a massive anti american feeling at the moment. I know that your people have finally started voting sensibly but you should know that the damage done through Bush's administration is immense. I personally think that your contry's credibility has taken a colossal battering that will be hard to recover from.

If the USA is going to the early stages of decline, you will need to outlast your great-great-great-great-grandchildren to see it, but it is looking towards a decline. I believe there is only one reason why, and that is the US Constitution and Bill Of Rights plus the liberalism that is predominant there in. I do say that the decline will not be as severed as the decline of the Roman Empire.

Yes, the US is in decline. But I disagree with your reasoning.
And I think the next super-power will be worse. I imagine some sort of bloc that includes Russia and China.
