1. Install Antivirus Software.
2. Install Firewall.
3. Use Firefox or Opera.
4. Install Anti-spy. (It's better if you have an anti-spy software with Real time Sheild).
5. Scan your computer once per day using quick scan and run a full system scan at least once per week.
6. Be careful when browsing, you're not recommended to click the links on advertisements.
7. If you're playing online games it's not recommended to find any cheats because most of them contains malwares and viruses.

Two products come to mind:
Zone Alarm Freeware (great firewall, very easy to use)
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=db_trial
AntiVir (good virus protection, also very easy to use)
http://www.free-av.com/
You might also install these to protect against other stuff:
Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Those can all work together to keep your computer safe. I've used all of these together for several years and have never had a problem with viruses, spyware, or trojans.
With ZoneAlarm remember to never give server access to anything that doesn't need it and please avoid file sharing apps if you can bare it.
Also, these are all freeware --download them, install them, and keep them archived on a CD, and be sure to give copies to your friends!

Get McAfee or Norton's internet security suites. Yeah they're not free but free stuff offers no support and no guarantees. Keep them updated weekly and avoid using peer to peer software and other tools until you become more internet savvy.
If you must download free mp3's please use LimeWire and be careful what you download.
