Contrary to popular beleif, it's not exactly illegal... but it is in some ways. Depending on your state, if your state specifically says you cannot use someone else's network, than yes it is. However, with most laptops being set in "automatically connect" mode, as long as you're not doing anything illegal on an automatically connected network, you should be pretty safe from the law. If you're constantly connecting to the same network, they could nail you. The way these laws are set up right now, you're guilty until proven innocent. How it works is, if someone catches you on their network, you pretty much have to prove that you weren't doing any malicious activity on their network, which will be pretty tough. It will include having people search through your computer, house, car, and whatnot, just to prove that you weren't doing anything bad on their network. It's kind of confusing, but I hope that helped out a little bit. Varies from state-to-state, so be careful.
P.S. Be careful about using unsecured networks too, if you're neighbors are like me and set up their network unsecured on purpose to watch traffic... They can legally monitor every packet you send over their network, including your credit cards, id's, and passwords. It's very easy to do with ARP Poisioning, and a packet sniffer.

No it is not illegal. The people next door, have a wireless network. I use it all the time. Look if they are to stupid to lock it down with a pass key, that is there problem. Don't worry. Keep useing it. All the people are wrong!!!! It is a radio waves. The people just don't have it lock down with a pass key. To the "IT man" if you where doing my Network Security. I would fire you. You run a Network Security, with no Security! COME ON!.... KEEP USEING IT!

its illegal if you get caught.
Its basically their fault if the techs don't put security settings on it.
if you leave your front door wide open the whole time, you are inviting trouble. Its as simple as that.
If you hacked into that network, then its illegal.
I do agree with Mad an Fred, people might be baiting you. But in a residential area, nobody would know.
Just be responsible enough not to mess around with their files.... thats when Karma sets in.
Hitching a ride ain't bad, just dont steal from the driver.

Link_sys is the out of the box name for their wireless routers, generally the user is a novice. You can use it, but at your own peril. Some people might bait and try to hack you through that connection, or some other nasty thing. Also, gotta think about karma, it could always come back and bite you in the ****.

umm is it your network?
if it is
no it isnt
also i would advise u to change the name and add a password if you dont have one.
if it isnt then yes it is illegal
but if u dont get caught then cant hurt you
(chances are if u are in a residential area u wont get caught) if in a bussiness area then i would be careful because people like me are waiting for someone to sign on my network.
lol hope this helped
