No, it is not his fault. I know a lot of Chicago Fans were unhappy with Dusty, but I think he did a pretty good job. He got us closer than anyone ever has. As for Wood and Prior, their injuries were unfortunate, but nobody's fault.

For Prior: in '01, he pitched 138 inning at the college level; in '02, he was at 168 innings (between the minors and majors), and in '03 at 211. That's a big jump - the benchmark I've seen is not to increase a young pitcher's innings by more than about 20 IP/year. Dusty can be blamed for the '03 jump, but the (more moderate) jump in '02 has to be blamed on the front office.

For Wood: the jumps in innings he saw were more moderate; there was a big jump in '02 (before Baker joined the Cubs), but that was his 4th year in the majors and he should have been better able to handle the increase. His innings were about the same in '03 (Dusty's first year) as in '02.

Overall: Baker probably bears some small amount of blame for Prio (though not nearly as much as has been placed on his shoulders), but I think he's clean for Wood.

HE HAS A LARGE PART TO DO WITH IT. Baker has a history of pitching his starters too much and they become injured. There are clear indicaitons and studies that pitchers who pitch more than 180 innings at younger ages have arm trouble. Prior has simply pitched too many innings in college and the pros. He may never come back.
Kerry Woods is another great cub hope that does not pan out. Burt Hooten, Oscar Zamora, Steve Stone, Ray Burriss, do I need go on...

It's not Dusty's fault. I would have to blame their problems on the pitching coaches they've had over the years. Unbelievable no one ever taught them the proper mechanics of pitching. Neither ever learned how to pitch with their legs. That single element has been their down fall.
