Beause it you do not go through it, you will not be able to produce the egg and the sperm that make up the baby which in turn grows up to adulthood and produces its own sex cells and the generations continue. Now you could reproduce with mitosis but you would be a clone of your parent and therefore you would be susceptable to anything your parent is, in other words you would die of the same causes your parents would and at the same time just like bacteria.

To prevent chromosome doubling when gametes fuse. Imagine a 46 chromosome gamete fusing with a 46 chromosome gamete, it'll result in a 92 chromosome zygote and the next generation will have 184 and so on. Wouldn't we all look weird by then? haha. So by having meiosis, chromosome numbers can be halved resulting in a complete daploid number when gametes fuse during fertilisation.
