I thought it was a cocaine addiction.

Yeah, I too believe it was cocaine, not morphine. However, he may have been just as addicted to morphine. He prescribed morphine to one of his friends who happend to be a doctor. Von Markov, I believe was his name (last name that is), and his addiction resulted from cocaine as well. Freud suggested he take this to wing him off of cocaine, but his suggestions would result in his demise. Today, mixing cocaine and morphine is known as a "speedball" it is what killed both John Belushi and Chris Farley. It would seem Freud would have to know about the effects of Morphine before prescribing it to his friend. So, he may have been doing morphine as well. Freud would also prescribe cocaine to his patients for severe depression. He was, well, quite a guy--unfortunate that we must rely upon him for the foundations of psychology.
