use the legend to read the map
legend tells u what the symbols represent on the map

Since there are different kinds of maps, there are a variety of answers to your question.

North "up" is not necessarily the best method. I prefer to hold the map so that the route I am following is pointed forward - so the direction I am traveling would be "up". However, my husband prefers north up.

These days, I just scan it and use a text-to-speech software. It reads everything on the map for me.

Put north at the top of the map.
Otherwise, the place names will not be right side up and you can't read them.
