use the legend to help u get information from the map
the colours will help u too ex, blue for lakes rivers oceans etc

Well generally the shape on a map represents a scaled down version of a piece of land. Certain lines on the map represent roads, and some maps will have symbols that will be explained on the map key located in a box on the corner of a map somewhere.
