U2 spy plane he flew across the USSR, South to North, and was shot down. His father fought very hard to get him released by the Russians, and eventually won.

After several years of imprisonment in the USSR, he was traded for a Russian master spy, and was real released.

At the time several "experts" proclaimed that this was the equivalent of trading a great sports guy for a minor league player.
