I'm 17 years old and I've always heard that you have to go to the gynecologist when you're 18 or sexually active. I'm not sexually active (at all.. still a virgin), and I'm not going to be until I'm married. So do I still have to go to the gyn at 18? My periods are normal with no difficulties (well, as little problems as can be with pms). Mature answers only; Please explain your answer. Thanks!

Keep away from all doctors unless it's absolutley unavoidable. You don't have to do anything you don't want to at 18.

Actually the recommendation for your first pap smear is when you are sexually active or before the age of 21. So no you don't have to go at 18.

A gyno examine can catch many different diseases, not just sexually transimitted diseases. Starting at your age whether your sexually active or not is a good recipe for a great habit of health. The examines can detect cancer, lumps, and other things that by just being a woman we don't catch all the time. Preventive medicine is the best medicine to a healthy life.

Yes you should go to the gyn to get checked every year. You may not be sexually active but this can not prevent you from getting cervical cancer or ovarian cysts. When you get a pap they check your vaginal area as well as your cervix to check for cancer. If you don't get checked they won't be able to detect it and early detection is the best form of prevention so just think about it!

There are things that can happen whether your sexually active or not.

You need a base-line pap smear and then you'll probably only have to go back in 2-3 years.

Go....it's better to be safe than sorry.

You need to go to make sure you don't have any cancers or growths that you can't see until someone checks you out. Just to make sure everything is normal.. you could have a cyst and not know it.. These check ups are VERY important.
