Ok, I have a 2001 Benz C240. I was just driving home from work this evening & all of a sudden I heard a loud pop! And I mean LOUD! Then the light popped up & said battery/alternator malfunction. I kept driving & while I was waiting at a light, it made a pop again like my engine fell to the ground. Well, I got over in the next lane & I was trying to pull over into a parking lot & I could barely turn the steering wheel! I had to litterally put all my weight into getting it to turn! I finally pulled over & cut the car off. And my lights cut off & won't come back on & my seat won't move either! GEEZ!
What should I do? I got one of those "warranties" you can purchase with the car but I am sure it is b.s. The boolet shows how it covers a mutitude of things like everything I described here. I will be calling them tonight. If they won't fix it, I would trade it in but I would be upside down by $10K! Dumb...I know! What should I do!!

Its gonna be one of your belts that's why the alternator light went on. The same belt runs the power steering pump that's why it got hard to steer. Its probably not a serpentine belt cause newer cars have more then one belt and a serpentine belt is just one belt that does it all. While your at it replace all your belts you'll thank me later. Its not a warranty type deal and don't let some mechanic try and hustle you, cause from the sound of it its the belt.

try to get it to a local garage or get someone remotely knowledgable about cars to look at it. Sounds like you lost a belt if the steering got hard before the engine cut off. If the belt got wrapped up in everything it probably was slapping the underside of the hood or something to cause the noise you heard. Naturally, if the belt breaks you also lose your alternator which means the battery isn't being charged. This would explain why it wouldn't start back. Chances are a belt, charging the battery, and maybe a few other small adjustments will fix you.

Shouldn't be an expensive repair. I bet a idler wheel seized or broke ( the large pop ) then the belts were thrown off and voila no power steering or alternator. If your battery is weak no power. I bet in a normal car it would be around 200.00 for a benz around 5 to 600.00 Good luck.

I'm a mechanic and supposed to be a pretty good one. I've only had two "break-downs" both tire failures. First was on I-70 in Denver at midnight. The second was 40 years later on Hwy 93 in north west Arizona in mid day in the summer. Both times, coincidence or not, a bunch of Hells Angels stopped and helped!!!

I would look under the hood and check the following. Did the battery explode? Did you throw a belt off (alt light hard to steer)Do you have any leaks showing. Then come back on and tell us what you find. Then perhaps we can help. Those warrieinties are not all that bad. Check it out frist before you go negitive on them. Have a good day.

Sounds to me like either you broke all the belts on the car or an idler pully either froze up or came off. Have someone you trust that knows about cars look at it and see if that is the problem.

Do I need to tell you that as soon as a car makes loud noises, you should pull over immediately? Its likely a broken belt or pulley like the other posters said. If you're lucky, you haven't hurt the engine by driving it after the first POP.

Look in the engine compartment and see if you've had a belt break. If you see pulleys with nothing on them, that's what it is.
