There is an old ditty from California that I ran across many years ago:

The miners came in '49,
The whores in '51,
Then they got together,
And made the Native Son.

If you are referencing the gold rush in California, it is generally thought of by historians to be the period from January 24, 1848 (when James Marshall found gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma) through until 1858. The reason so many people believe it was in 1849 comes from the slow moving information about the finding of gold to the population in the eastern portion of the United States, and to other portions of the world (Chile and China stand foremost in my mind). So even though it was found in 1848, by the time Sam Brannan, a businessman with a knack for earning money, used his own printing press to print news releases and send them to the Atlantic shores via mule train, the people stampeding (the rush for gold) got truly underway the following year.
I've included some good web references (and there are many more) on this period which changed history.

1849.

To see the 'live' spot NY gold price and some museum size gold nuggets I suggest you visit a great site I found a few months ago. I purchase a few nuggets from them just about a month ago, and not only are they beautiful to look at but in just the last few weeks they have really moved up in value!

I'm actually saving to purchase others!

The site is: http://www.california-gold-rush-miner.us

Their museum nuggets are at:

The most expensive gold is called Crystalline gold. Some great photos of it can be viewed at:
