Since the vehicle had five eighths of a tank of fuel, and I used three eighths of a tank of fuel, this means that I used two eighths of a tank of fuel, which is equal to a quarter of a tank.

3/8 + x = 5/8 ... Subtract 3/8 from both sides ...
x = 2/8 = 1/4
