Nightmares you can usually remember and they occur when you are in late stages of sleep. Night terrors usually can't be remembered and happen in earlier stages of sleep. With night terrors you can appear to be awake and talking (crying, screaming, whatever) but you are not and will not remember these actions.

It has been awhile since I have taken psychology, but I think those are some differences!

Nightmares wake you up, or make you sleep restlessly.
Night terrors make you wake up sweating, and sometimes keep you awake.
