ok i am working on the alternator o a 1996 fors taurus gl 3.0, and i have came to a problem that i know can easily be answered that i cant figure out....ok i got a new alternator, and i took out the old one fine ( a little tight but fine) and wen i went to put in the new one i could nt becuz the belt was too tight..i wanna know on this particular car how can i loosen up the belt so that i dont have top go thru this same trouble again..(the 1st time i had to take out the tensoner looking thing (plastic) and it went in ok but its was very very tight and difficult)...again how may i loosen up the serpentine belt?...please help me!..thank you!

To make it easier to see what is going on, remove the coolant/washer solvent tank. This makes it a lot easier to see if you have the belt routing correct. A lot of times if you have the belt wrong, it will be too short. Also, as suggested before, check the alt pulley (although I hardly ever see a different sized alt pulley). My guess is that it is a belt routing issue.

are the pulleys on the alternator the same size? the only way I know to do it is release the pressure on the tensioner and put the belt on. Maybe you will have to buy a new belt that is a couple of inches longer.

Recheck the belt routing. It sounds like it is not right. They are a real tight fit to begin with.
