I am going to be buying a 20-30 gallon tank this weekend, and later, after water cycles, will be buying fish that need a filter, and like a certain PH level. I was just curious as to how you do this? What should I buy to put into the water? The fish I am buying when the time comes, are Kuhli Loaches, so they thrive better on a good PH level. Also, is it a hassle to get the levels right? What else should I know about keep the water conditions optimal?

Thanks to anyone who helps.

Trying to adjust pH levels can be dangerous for your fish. Most fish are better off outside an ideal pH as long as the pH stays consistant. Chemical pH adjusters can cause a large pH swing which is often fatal. If you really need to lower pH, the best thing to do is either add peat to the filtration system or add some driftwood pieces, which will add tannins into the water and lower pH. To raise pH, you can add crushed coral or limestone. Any of these alternatives are better than chemical adjustments and you will not get quick swings.

As far as filters go, the more filtration the better. I have both a power filter (which hangs on the back of the tank, for my 29 gallon it's a millenium 1000) and an Eclipse filter for my 20 gallon. Undergravel filters tend to be a pain in the butt but some people like them. Kuhil loaches like to burrow, so I'd use a fine substrate or sand. You definately don't want a UGF with sand as a substrate.

To keep your water conditions optimal do weekly water changes of about 20%. Remember when you cycle the tank to add a source of ammonia (you can use household ammonia or some fish food). Good luck and have fun!
