Bad Religion does have kickass lyrics, but I gotta go w/ the Velvet Underground for starting it all (although technically they're pre-punk). The Clash were brilliant, of course, but I think they were a tad bit overrated, and while I like the Sex Pistols, they WERE products to an extent. The Ramones... crack me up. I can't say anything against the Ramones.
Also, to Shelby J... I've had some seriously bad experiences with Shelbys in my past... anyway- Green Day hardly started punk. They weren't even AROUND 'til the 80s, neither their music nor their lyrics are particularly notable and they're good friends with MTV and screaming preteen girls.

one of the greastest bans around are Bad Religon. greg graffin is one of the most amazing singers and lyricists. mr brett is probably most responsible for where punk music is today. you see he founded this little record label called epitaph. the label that got punk going. before epitaph, there were not a whole lot of labels willing to work with punk bands. epitaph got it rolling.
