Idealism, crime, corruption, change -- all things considered, what is daily life like in South Africa?

Ok so South Africa is full of crime, corruption, unemployment, etc...but in the end it's a great country with beautiful scenery, friendly people, good jobs and great entertainment. Crime and corruption is all around us but it does not mean that you will fall victim or witness any of it firsthand! It's not as if it is happening around every corner in front of your eyes! Daily life in South Africa is like living anywhere else in the world with very few differences. We do not live in a country where animals roam the streets, where elephants and horses are our form of transport, where people live in tree houses and the rich in mud houses. We do not live in a country where every policeman is a corrupt or a criminal, where you see someone getting mugged, raped shot or killed in front of you as you leave your house, where roads are sand and not tar, where people don't know what a computer is, where cellphones have not come into existence yet. We live in a modern, civilised country with advanced technologies. As opposed to some of the other countries I've been to, you can walk the streets in SA and greet a passer by, a complete stranger and be greeted back with a smile. Even some of the criminals are courteous enough to tell you to have a good night after they rob you, lol! I'm not even joking, it happened to my friend. The weather in South Africa is great too and there is not much of a worry for natural disasters. Traffic is getting a little bit bad at the moment because the public transport is shocking. That is when there is public transport. But they are working on improving that currently. I have lived in SA my whole life and I still love it here! I enjoy every day I spend in this country and I intend to live here for many years to come!

Generally good, but then we are of the privileged top 5% earners so life is surely easier than for others. This is no different in any other country.

There is a sense of freedom for most, especially when compared to many other African countries.

Economy is strong, and consumers are having it better than ever, as our currency value is holding OK and hence our interest rates are low for South African historic levels. (prime rate at around 11.5%)

We have a problem with crime (like most developing countries, I suppose) so there are many unhappy voters. What is most worrying is the high levels of violent crimes (murder, rape, malicious assault, baby raping, car jacking, etc.) that points to evil state of mind many perpetrators – so it is not merely survival of the poor. This is supported by the fact that many of the crimes are committed by crime syndicates. What makes it worse is that are reasons to believe that senior law enforcement staff and politicians are involved. (Is this different in other countries)

Weather is stunning – all year round.

Quality of life is good – Low traffic levels, real estate is affordable, private hospitals are OK, food quality is high, infrastructure (roads) good, holiday destinations good, etc.

Worth a visit if you are from elsewhere…

You've got the picture. More than 50 murders a day, a woman raped every 8 minutes, car jackings on the roads continuously, serious assaults with weapons, armed robberies at Shopping Malls and Restaurants, burglary and theft, AIDS pandemic, corrupt Government, tourists sites unsafe, cities littered with squatter camps, inner cities in decay and unsafe, beaches littered with urchins but as the proud South Africans tell you it's just like any other Country. LOL. It's not a War zone - a War zone is safer. Totally f*cked.

Daily life is confusing, because the government is trying to implement changes, very few understand the rules, some of the rules needd changing, and AIDS is killing off large portions of the population. All governments have abuse. Many in Africa are worse than South Africa

Woke up this morning. Had breakfast. Drove to work down the N2/ R300 stretch like I do every morning. Will be leaving at 5 for drinks with my mates and then off home. Camps Bay on the weekend, clubbing in Cape Town at night. Wake up on Sunday and go skydiving. Next week wedding, week after my birthday.

Problems of crime. Yes. War-zone like many would have you believe? No.

If you're white, then they're really crappy. If you're black, then they're pretty much just crappy. I've known some people who have lived there all of there lives and they all pretty much paint the same picture. The government has half-as*ed reforms, corruption abounds, businesses try to take the people for as much as they can get away with while providing bad service, etc.
