if someone asks you what you want why not tell them

it depends how you look at it. Christmas, is the give of giving and reunion and spending time with your love ones. technically, there shouldn't even be presents. The presents that people give are a symbol of caring and when you recieve a gift from a friend, it's usually because they hope that you will like it and they try to match it with your personality.
You might not always get what you want but it's the thought of someone giving you the gift that counts

I have a few pet peeves and this is right near the top.

I hate when people do that & I always tell them don't to do that because if I choose to give a present it'll be one I picked out myself.

These people usually get something crummy. LOL

NO!!!!! NEVER acceptable to ASK specifically for a Present on any occasion -- especially Christmas. That is just plain greedy.

No. That is why it is called a "gift". The giver wants to give a present to the giftee.

One (adult/adolecent) should NEVER expect any presents.

That's why they're fun and a surprise when they come.

To ask, no, unless you're a kid. To expect to get it, no. To inform them of what you might like, yes, that is ok.
