The pituitary gland?

2006-11-14 11:49:06 · answer #1 · answered by Rockford 7 · 0 0

correct answer is the pituitary gland. Not the hypothalamus. The hyopthalmus is a subcortical brain structure not a gland. The posterior lobe of the gland is connected to the hypothalamus but the aterior is not. The pituitary gland is about the size of a pea and is known as the "master" gland and is responsible for most of homeostasis.

The Hypothalamus.Body temperature is regulated by the thyroid hormones, secreted by thyroid gland. From Hypothalamus, thyroid-releasing hormone(TRH) is secreted and stimulated the pituitary gland to secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH).TSH then stimulated the thyroid gland to synthesis and secrete triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxine (T4).
This thyroid hormones increase the basal metabolic rate(BMR),the rate of oxygen consumption under standard or basal conditions(awake,at rest, and fasting) by stimulating the use of cellular oxygen to produce ATP.When the BMR increases, cellular metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins increases.

So, you can say that the hypothalamus helps to regulate the body temperature because hypothalamus is the one that stimulates the pituitary to secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone which then influence the body temperature by activating the thyroid gland to secrete thyroid hormones.

Hope this clear enough for you.
