I believe that you are referring to a stereo-microscope. Generally stereo-microscopes have low magnification and are used for the study of macroscopic 3-dimensional objects like insects. Hope this helps.

It is called a compound microscope. A stereoscopic microscope is one that is designed to produce a 3D image (it is built as two microscopes side by side) and a binocular microscope allows you to use both eyes to view the image but only uses one objective lens.
