I am also 22 weeks and a smoker well I quit actually but it was hard. It is very very lucky that all those children came out healthy. So anyways here goes I am sure you know what smoking does to an unborn child, my doctor told me if I "HAVE" to smoke only take about 4-5 drags and stay away fromt he butt. He said dont go cold turkey due to the stress it may cause. I did quit only because I think it is gross to look a 9 month pregnant women smoking, and my biggest concern is if you can't quit while your pregnant chances are you can't when the baby is born and 2nd hand smoke leads to alot more problems then smoking when your pregnant, and most people say oh i will go outside and it starts that way but then the don't want to miss the part of the movie of it's to cold outside and they end up smoking in the house.
This is my 2nd child with my first I quit when i found out and she was born with alot of problems she had a very week immune system and was sent home on an apnea monitor to make sure she doesn't stop breathing while she sleeps I don't blame smoking but I can honestly say it didn't help and never once has she been in the same area as a lit cigarette.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and I still smoke. IT IS HARDER TO QUIT THAN ALOT OF PEOPLE ADMIT. I have also cut way back. My first daughter I smoked also and she was healthy and still is, and this pregnancy everything looks real good. And honestly with my first I didnt find out I was pregnant till my 3 month (smoking a pack a day) the doc told me not to totally quit smoking it would send baby through withdraw, but by the time I had her I was smoking 2 a day. Am I saying go ahead smoke a pack a day NO. Do try to quit and good luck but if you can tjust make sure you cut way back.

Well, with my first I quit as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I was around 2 months I guess. Nothing bad happened. Then I started again after I quit breastfeeding. Then the same things again with my other 2. But I never had problems quitting at all. I would just find out Im pregnant immediatley after I had gotten pregnant and quit. I didnt want to hurt the baby in any way. After the 3rd baby I quit completely and havent smoked for over 3 years now. I would quit cold turkey especially if you have seen what can happen. I quit cold turkey each time and I never got any withdrawals. I am too paranoid about that stuff to put the baby at risk.

I'm twelve weeks pregnant, and I still smoke, although I've cut way back. With my son, I smoked the whole time, but my son is more than fine. He didn't get any sicker as an infant than any other child. He was a big baby, too.
I've cut back with this one, but it's really hard to quit. My husband is all over me to quit, but it's so hard. The withdrawal symptoms hit me really hard. Contrary to what people say, those withdrawal symptoms can last up to two weeks. I'm working to get down to two cigarettes a day, and once I do that, I'll substitute them with the nicotine gum. I'm not going from a pack to nothing, though. God knows what that could do.
My doctor said that the gum was fine, though, and that although smoking will not cause birth defects, it can up the baby's risk for SIDS, lowered birth weight, and fetal injury. It's important to try to quit before your third trimester. With any luck, I'll be done by the middle of the second.
There are certain risks to a baby associated with smoking. Although those are few and far between, you should really make an effort to quit, because you could fall into one of those statistics. I'm doing my best to quit. Any woman who's pregnant should certainly try her hardest.
It can also raise your risk for heart attack, too, while you're pregnant, as your blood volume raises 40-50%. Just food for thought.

I found pregnancy to be a very good reason to quit. I smoked maybe 3-4 cigarettes after finding out I was pregnant and was able to quit after that. I suggest you look into a nicotine patch or speak with your DR. The smoke just has to stop before later in the 3rd trimester, your baby's lungs will thank you.

Since you smoke only 5 cigarettes a day, I don't think it will be that hard to you to try to quit for good. They say that if you quit until you reach 3-4 months of pregnancy, your chances of having a healthy child greatly improve and are almost equal to those of a mother who never smoked. Biggest risks about smoking while pregnant are miscarriage, low birth weight and preterm birth. They never actually proved for sure that smoking causes birth defects, so that part it's not well known.
I heard of a lot of mothers who smoked during pregnancy and nothing happened, while my mother never smoked or drinked or anything, and I had asthma and was a really sick little child. My advice to you would still be to quit, for your peace of mind, cause smoking while pregnant it's obviously something you're not entirely comfortable with (since you're asking), so it's not worth the stress. You'll see you'll be able to enjoy your pregnancy more and to stop worrying about it.
Congratulations and good luck!

You need to quit! You can cause your child serious birth defects because you can't go without a smoke for a couple months. It's great that you've cut down, but why not stop for your baby? It's never healthy for the baby, not smoke, not drinking, not anything! I included a website for you to begin reading. You can find info all over the internet about it. I'd recommend educating yourself on it and quitting ASAP.... for your baby.
