If you were stranded on an island, what things would you need for making a shelter?

wood for infrastructure, like strong branches. broad leaves, hopefully palm trees are on the island, for a roof for rain and wind. also you can use palm leaves to make string to tie the wood frame into place and as a floor in case you dont wanna have sand in your toes.

from this point you can forage for food. but you would need to develop some tools. string from palm trees, a small branch, and a stone can make anything from a crude hammer to a knife or spear. sooner or later you will have to hunt.

you can use skins from any larger animals, cured properly of course or you'll get anthrax, to build a teepee-like structure or maybe reinforce the structure you've already built.

from this point on, you have a comfortable base and tools in which you can probably use to build a cabin out of whole trees. but that's probably not feasible with those kinds of tools.

if you're lucky this island will have a cave on it which requires only exploration like tom hanks in castaway.

i would hate to be in the wild without a knife, above all. second, i guess i'd just need some wood (like trees) and a good spot to build a lean-to. or, a big tree with lots of branches close to the ground would be good, just break out some branches from the bottom and crawl in and you got a totally sweet shelter. until you can expand on it or the awesomest thing of all would be to make a above ground tree deal. the canopy serves as a roof, (but it drips so u may wanna cover ur sleeping area) and ur safe from most predators or porcupines and the like. a hatchet or machete would be awesome for all those shelters.... and i guess matches or a lighter, to maybe burn excess stuff away... aside from shelter, i'd want a bow.
