Maybe you should play more of an active listener mode if your afraid you may say something offensive. Try and be cordial and polite so as not to ruin either the holiday or the meal but I wouldn't bend over and kiss their asses if you feel that you've been wronged. Best of luck and keep an open mind also during the meal.

Give them the common courtsey that you would give a stranger on the street. Be a good listener remember if they are complainers you won't be able to do much about it. But you could turn the tables, asking things like, "so how did you and dad meet", "what was my husband like as a child" those sorts of things. Get them talking about something good. but remember civil is the best route.

I would do a bit of investigative work. Find what Mom likes to do with a hobby. Like.... oh, scrap-booking is a hot hobby for older folks. Anyway, after locating something she enjoys, goggle it and brush up on it's ins and outs. You will probably be discussing this with only Mom but that's the way these things go anyway.

Boy can I relate! Ask them about themselves and what they are doing... find out ahead of time, and then pretend to be interested. Keep the topics light. Don't go where you don't want to go. When the conversation starts to get into territory you don't want to go... head to the ladies room!

Do they travel? Do they read? Hobbies? Other grandkids that you also don't see much of? Find those topics you use at cocktail parties that you use on strangers.

It's what I do when I have to go out with the out-laws.
good luck!
