If you were a business consultant at the end of the 19th century, what advice would you have offered the people of the south (in the U.S) to help them boost their economy?

Nothing. Too hard headed and slow. You can't tell someone like that anything. And very adverse to any kind of change. That's why there was a war. That's why it's still a bad economy today no matter what kind of capital infusion is pumped in.

I would advise the South to "stay the course" because in 75 years all the GD yankees would move down here and buy your 40 acres of crop poor dirt for subdivisions and you will make a fortune.
