The link below is a Wikipedia entry that answers many of your questions. As for what optometrists are paid, you may have to check with an optometrist or a school of optometry for that. You can work lots of hours at any job and optometry is no exception. If you enjoy the work and there is lots of work to do, I'm sure there will be lots of long days. Only you will know if it is rewarding for you. I'm sure that it is rewarding for many optometrists.
