I don't know where it says it in print, but I can tell you how it works. When the doctor has a woman in the stirrups he uses a speculum ( it is a thing that the doctor inserts into a woman the opens her gently so the doctor can see into her ). If he inspects her internally he can see if the hymen is present. It will be there if she is a virgin UNLESS she has, say, fallen off a horse or maybe a car wreck. It can be torn in a virgin if she has had enough trauma. It is just a little flap of skin that partially blocks the vagina.

NO! A gynecologist can NOT tell if you are a virgin or not by a pelvic exam. First of all, just because you don't have a hymen does not mean you are a virgin. In fact, a lot of girls that are virgins do not have their hymen. It can be broken by things like horseback riding and gymnastics.

No do not worry, the hymen can be torn easily while riding a horse, or a bike or by doing sports and even masturbating (which truly is the safest form of sex ;). A doctor will not care weather you are a virgin or not and will not make a big deal one way or the other, nor will they assume you are sexually active just based on that criteria.
