The fact that you are asking about God is a good thing. The Bible only tells stories. The thing that makes God real or not is your Faith! I can tell you from experience that there is a God and (he/she yet to be determined, I will use he) he is as real as the sun that comes up every morning. When the Bible stories were written they wrote the way people spoke in those days. So sometimes the stories seem unreal. That can make it difficult to believe. I think if you read the Bible from front to back but pray and ask God to let you see his message he will let you see his heart. It is also one of the reasons why the world has had so much death. It is funny that people kill so many other people in the name of God. I put it to you like this, If you don't believe in God what do you believe...So read you Bible...

Is there actually a reason to believe or disbelieve in God?
By reason, I mean a logical motive for believing. Or does one merely believe by faith, without reason getting involved?
It has seemed to me since I actually read the Bible many years ago, that it could not be the work of a single sane, consistent being. There are dozens, if not hundreds or places where one statement in the Bible contradicts another.
If Jesus' purpose on Earth was to convert everyone to Christianity, and Jesus was perfect, it seems as though his results, now, after nearly 2000 years, are very far from perfect. It seems to me that a higher percentage of humans on this planet have heard of Coca-Cola (which makes no claims of perfection) than have heard of Jesus.
Jesus died, returned for a brief period, than claimed that he would return yet again, before the last of those he bid farewell to had died.
That was around 1977 years ago. Still no signs of Jesus. Do you think that there is a possibility of some 1,900 + year old apostles hanging out somewhere on Earth?
The Bible is an assortment of books on tribal history, poetry, mores and ethics and legends. Some of it is true, all of it is based on something that happened in the past.
I suggest reading the Bible. I also suggest Isaac Azimov's guide to the OT and NT.
If you get insomnia, the Book of Mormon might cure it.
I was unable to make it through the Book or Mormon or the Koran, but perhaps you might.

It doesn't make sense to make the Bible the basis of one's belief in God. But if one already believes in God -- a sort of "unknown God" -- then exploring the Bible with an open mind can be a way of coming into contact with the God who IS. This is not a simple process, however. Many conservative Christians think the meaning of the Bible is simple, but they are mistaken. The Bible is an extremely complex set of documents written over the course of many centuries. When we read the Bible today, we must ask ourselves what to make of it. In doing so -- to make matters even more difficult -- we must also encounter what various Christian traditions make of the Bible. These traditions have different (sometimes radically different) ideas about, for example, what holds the Bible together as one book.
A common understanding, however, is that the Bible is the history of God's dealings with humanity in a cosmic or mythological sense. What that means is that it is not literal "history" (for the mostpart) but rather a truth-filled story that explains the fundamental relationship of God to the human race and to the world as a whole. The center of that story is Jesus (according to this understanding), so even though many things about God in the Bible do not seem consistent with the teachings and actions of Jesus, they can be understood as in some sense pointing towards Jesus as the fulfillment, after many centuries, of God's love for humanity.
It isn't easy to understand how this all works out in detail -- in fact, understanding it is a lifelong task that will not be complete even when we die. But it is worth making the effort.

no, the bible alone is not a legitimate reason to conclude there is a "God". There is no concrete, legitimate reason that can conclude that Christianity's version of God, is indeeed, real. Christians go upon faith, but unfortunately often confuse faith with fact. I believe many of the stories in the bible were written and told in order to instill fear and "sway the masses", as was previously stated. although, a belief in a higher power should not be abandoned just because the bible isn't exactly "legit"....

I believe in the bible. It is the word of God, written by men but God telling them what to right. I am reading a book right now called "Why you can trust the bible" It has 7 reasons why. 1 is that it has never been wrong historically. It also hasnt been wrong predicting the future, even down the every king's names. Jut think, 40 differnet authors of the bible, all agreeing on the same thing and never contradicting their writings...and they never even met eachother!!! Some say the bible is true becuase God says its true. But thats circular reasoning because the bible is the word of God. If none of those reasons swayed you, if you believe in God, then youd better believe what he says

well it was said religion is the Opiate of the masses. It gives people hope to believe in a high being. I'm taking a cynical view in saying simply there is no high being. What interested would it take in us? The fact is we are simply animals. In the eyes of a higher being we are no differant then say monkeys. Also a "high being" would most likely not have the sense of time we do. Therefore they would see all that would happen to us. A simplt blip in the universe upon billions of galaxys. We have only existed for a short period of time not to mention the fact its possible that they are in one of those other billions of galaxys which contain solar system with planets. Not only that but most of the events atributed to a god in anceint times have a modern explantion. When a monsoon hit china hundreds of years ago they claimed the kind was not in the favor of the gods. When in fact it was due to say an atmospheric pattern. The bible was written by man and not dictated by a god. For if it was dictated by a god who could see all pas present and future would he not have made the laws understanding of human nature?

The bible has many truths in it, and can be a wonderful way to live with the right interpretation. It is comical to think that God wrote it and said that it was his last word to humanity. That is when the christians lost the humility of jesus and gained the pride of satan. As for should you believe in God or not based on that, it might be a better question to ask what your concept of God is, A man that you meet when you die that is mad at you for playing with yourself or getting a divorce or an alien race that secretly controls men to their own whim, or maybe its the force that controls your personal destiny, which i think might be much smaller than God but an aspect of him still.

People sit around and claim the Bible is the word of God. Said people are wrong. The Bible was not only written by the Apostles(sp?), but it was originally written in a now dead language. My boyfriend knows Latin, and when you see how many ways there is to translate a single word you stop being able to trust it. There is some truth behind the bible, that I am sure. But those who find ourselves stuck in the middle are defined as Agnostic. Welcome to the club, care for a jacket?

The Bible is a legitimate reason to believe. Anything that be rationalized. The Bible CAN'T prove God exists.

Well the Bible is just there to help guide people the to right directions. love your neighbor, be a good person thats about it. You don't have to go through what the bible says its being who you want to be and who you are. I believe in God but i don't believe it in the religious ways but i respect how the religious ways think its who they are and i am pruod of that so why doubt yourself in what you believe? Believe what you think you believe IN! ...=D
