And because giant planets such as Saturn and Jupiter are mainly gaseous they are probably failed stars. Pretty cool?! Astronomers are watching a surprising storm suddenly appearing in Saturn and wondering what is going on there. Astronomy is a fascinating hobby or profession since there is still so much to learn even about the objects closest to Earth.

Hi,
Inner four planets (if you are considering the old 9 planet format) are all rocky planets. The outer four are gaseous in nature.
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are all primarily rock and metals with light to extremely dense atmospheres.
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are largely, possibly entirely gaseous, and are also noted for large numbers of rocky moons and ring formations (Saturns being the most famous).
Hope this helps,
-dh

Uh, the outer 4 all have rings...the inner 4 don't. I guess that the outer four are the 4 biggest, the inner four are the 4 smallest.
