As a veteran of EverQuest, World of Warcraft is a gigantic leap forward. You create a character based on which faction you want to play (Alliance or Horde), which race (depends on faction), and which class.
You then are free to pursue your goals in game however you see fit. If you want to just kill stuff for fun and profit, fine! If you want to quest, there a many quests to choose from and many are part of a larger chain. Some quest rewards are valuable and you rarely do the same quest over and over again (one of the huge problems with EQ). If you can find groups, you can go into a dungeon for lots of experience and fine treasure.
If you want to fight against other players from the opposing faction, you can play on a pvp realm (server) or compete in the battlegrounds. If you want to role-play, you can play on a role-playing realm.
There's also an active social scene attached to WoW for many people. Especially if you are part of a guild and have a chat server (for Teamspeak or Ventrilo). The folks you end up grouping with regularly can become friends in real life.
Like a lot of activities, you get what you put into it. If you invest time in learning how to play your class effectively, people will come to respect your abilities. If you act like a fool, your reputation will precede you and folks will shun you. You might run into the occasional jackass but most folks are pretty nice.

Not really. I would suggest www.runescape.com instead. That is free, unless you want to be a member. World of Warcraft, however, you have to pay $15 DOLLARS A MONTH JUST TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!! COME ON!!!!!!!! World of Warcraft may have good graphics, while the ones on runescape might not be so good, but World of Warcraft STINKS!!!

It really depends on the individual playing it. It is definately more fun when you have friends that you know in real life that are playing it with you. The downsides to Wow are the same downsides to all MMOs. It takes forever to get anything accomplished. There's really no story to it. It never ends...

i know everyones gonna get all mad at me but, its only good for awhile. If you don't have friends that play it, then its not worth getting. then when you hit about the midpoint of the game it gets really repetitive.

it depends.. if u like diablo 2 warcraft3 ft characters in diablo 2 or gw (guild wars) mode then u prolly will enjoy it..
