1. long bones like the humerus and femur and tibia
2. cuboidal bones like those in the foot or hand: cuboid, navicular
3. flat bones like those in the cranial vault: zygomatic, maxilla, ethmoid
4. special bones like the stapes and hammer in the ear; sesamoid bones is another sub type like the patella and the foot sesamoids

They also have protective role (to protect vital organs), eg. skull to protect brain and ribs to protect heart. They contain large reserves of calcium, bone marrow takes a part in red blood cells, white blood cells, cloth cells production.
