What is some background information on the books "The Scarlet Letter" and "The Crusible"?

I need some background information on these books to have a better feel as to what these books are about before I start reading. Like theme, inner meanings, perspective, etc.

" The Crucible" is about early American in New England who jump to conclusions about some young girls and an older woman they come to believe are witches. It is very interesting. It lets you see how people can mean well, but come to conclusions that aren't necessarily true. It has a tragic ending.
"The Scarlet Letter" is about a young woman who commits a sexual impropriety and because of it she is punished. Her punishment is to wear a RED "A" around her neck so everyone can see what her sin was. I won't tell you everything. You will want some suspense.
