I suppose it's gonna depend on the Mother-In-Law!

My MIL has spent quite a few years giving, without getting much in return...My FIL has assumed that she had everything she wanted, and had actually stopped giving her gifts for about ten years (he's a little thick sometimes, but ya gotta love the guy). We have corrected that little problem, and all of her kids and grand kids have been working on getting her nice gifts, for the past few years. A few things that she has recently been given that brought tears to her eyes:
* A stocking full of fun things (since I've known her, Santa has left stockings for everyone but her...if you can imagine, four kids, all their spouses, six grandkids, and no stocking for Grandma!).
* Tickets to the symphony for an evening out with her adult granddaughter.
* A poem written about her, by another granddaughter and grandson, put into a lovely picture frame.

I think the theme here is that these were items that someone took time with...Either time spent working on it, or time spent with her.

I'm planning on putting together a scrapbook for her this year...She has a whole drawer full of a lifetime of photos, and none are even in books, let alone documented. We're going to see them for Thanksgiving, so I'm gonna try to sneak some out of the drawers...I think it will be fun to tell the story of her family...And I know she'll love it!

I guess that all depends on whether you like her or not. I was not blessed with a wonderful Mother-in-Law and she'd like for me to divorce her son as her gift. Some people really have a good relationship with their Mother-in Law and of that's the case, try to get her something she'll appreciate, something that expresses her interests and that shows her you that you care about her.

It's hard to say without knowing her, but one nice gift would be a good wooden or pewter 8x10 frame with a picture of you and your husband, and children if you have any. This can be a snapshot that you have enlarged to fit the frame.

A trip to a spa, as some have said is good, or an hour's massage would be a nice gift, too.

I hope you have a nice Christmas!

THANKING her for raising such a responsible, respectable child that you married.

Giving her the GIFT of TIME -- some time to herself -- or better yet, a special day with just the two of you in a pleasant environment -- and LET HER CHOOSE the activity she wants to do with you!

REMEMBER her on days OTHER than Christmas -- and that will go a long ways.

Something just for her, maybe a ring, necklace, or gift card at a store where she can buy clothes, nothing for the house only just for her, maybe a place where she can have a massage and a make-over...and a gift card where she likes to eat too............

well it depends on what she likes!
I could agree with the one way trip somewhere but that can get expensive! =)
Maybe something a little cheaper like a rug with a design she likes or expensive perfume, shoes, an appointment to a hair professional something that would mean something to her...
I know it wouldn't mean nothing but my mother-in-law needs some trash bags to throw away the junk she collects and plz if your mother-in-law is a junkie and she is obsessed with keeping a 20 yr old mop plz get her trash bags maybe she will get the hint this yr.... =)

Without knowing the woman, it's impossible to know.
Something she will like and use.
Ask her son, husband, other relatives or friends of hers what she likes.
A well thought out gift, even if relatively inexpensive, will be remembered and appreciated more than a 'no thought' gift certificate.

How about a gift certificate for a treatment, like a facial or manicure?

Do you have children? You could have a calendar made with pictures of their grandchildren for each month. There are a few websites that will do it and send it to you if you just send them the photos. I know http://www.shutterfly.com will do it. You might check kinkos and staples' websites as well.
