This probably overshadows a much larger area of my life. I was wondering if anybody has any serious advice or knows of any useful books in regards to effective speaking. My childhood was extremely shy so I rely heavily on abstract thought processes which throws off my timing completely during everyday speaking situations. Most of the time (especially with the opposite sex) it is always after the fact that I figure out what I should have said, or wanted to say. I want to learn how to convey my ideas more clearly and in a concise manner. Any advice in relation to this would be much appreciated. Thank You.

Check out the book, "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!"
It will really help you see your fears from a different perspective, which will help you to overcome them.
As for speaking in public, whether to one or many, doesn't come natural for a lot of people, so the only way to get better at it is with
practice, practice, practice.
Start by talking to those you are most comfortable with first; then start branching out from there.
Also, when you realize that most people only listen to maybe half of what you say (unless it has something to do with them), you'll realize you don't have to be perfect.
Trust me, it works!
Now get out there and start yacking it up!

You will come across as most erudite if you respond to people by echoing their statements and asking questions about what they've just said. People love to talk about themselves and be asked their opinions about things.
